There are two aspects to your website in order for it to be found on the internet.
Your website is hosted on the Adobe Business Catalyst platform, as Rangs is an Adobe Business Catalyst partner.
Adobe make the software for the following programs: Photoshop, Indesign, Adobe PDF, Dreamweaver and many others.
When you log in to the back end of your website to edit pages, view statistics, run email campaigns etc, you are using the Adobe Business Catalyst platform to edit your Adobe BC website.
Most subscriptions for our client websites are set to yearly. Some clients like to pay monthly, so you can also set your Adobe BC subscription to monthly. We recommend paying yearly as it attracts a 10% discount on the overall hosting fee for your Adobe BC website.
In order for your website to go live on the world wide web, a domain name needs to be purchased. Generally this is set up by us when your website goes live. If you purchased your domain name yourself, then you will be emailed the login details to maintain the domain settings. We need this information when sending your website live.
Your domain name is also known as the URL or web address of your website. It is a bit like an entry in a phone book pointing to your house (or website in this case).
There are many domain providers out there: Crazy Domains, Netregistry etc Rangs recommends and uses Crazy Domains.
Usually your domain names registration will last 2 years and then it will need to be renewed.
Your domain provider will email the contact address they have on record to remind you that the domain is up for renewal. It is a good idea to pay this renewal fee early, rather than leave it to the last minute.
The cost you can expect to pay is around $30 for two years. Any higher charge than this is probably not a good deal.
If you do not renew your domain name when it falls due, then your BC website will no longer be available on the internet.
Rangs is also available to take care of your domain renewals. When you get a notice asking you to renew your domain, please feel free to contact us.
If you are our web client we keep records here of who your domain name provider is. If you do not have this information give us a call and we can help you with that.
If you are not already with us as a web client we can do a Whois lookup to work out who your domain is registered with. If you cannot log in to manage your domain setup and need that information we can also help you get that access restored. It just requires a bit of detective work on our part.
Unfortunately as is with many things to do with the Internet, there are some scams out there that you need to beware of with domain names.
Firstly, if you leave renewal of your domain name to the last minute, or until after it is expired, someone else can claim that domain name, and then charge you a high fee to get it back.
Secondly, anyone can search on your domain name, and purchase a similar one for two years for around $30. Then when the real domain name you are using for your site comes due for renewal, the scammers send you a letter regarding the domain name that is very close to yours, saying that it is up for renewal. The fee is often high, such as $200 for 2 years.
Should you get any letters that look suspect concerning your domain name, or one very similar to it, please contact us.
